Alexandra Reed

Psychologist

Alexandra Reed

Dr. Reed is a curious, compassionate, and thoughtful psychologist who will support you to evaluate and accept where you are now while getting clear about where you want to go. She believes that therapy works best when it is a collaborative process that generates a shared understanding of your concerns and challenges, your core values, and your targets for change that would most improve your quality of life. Dr. Reed fosters a safe, non-evaluative therapeutic environment in which she hopes to support you to build your resilience and existing strengths, learn and practice new skills, and apply what you learn outside of therapy where it matters most.

Dr. Reed brings expertise in clinical health psychology and enjoys working with adults with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, and adjustment to new or chronic health conditions. Her areas of expertise within health psychology include: insomnia/sleep disorders, diabetes, chronic pain, autoimmune conditions, cancer, nicotine cessation, caregiver stress, and medical trauma. Other specialties include specific phobias, social anxiety, grief/loss, gender dysphoria and transition, and trauma. Dr. Reed recognizes that all people hold unique and intersecting identities and welcomes all, including clients who identify as LGBTQIA+, BIPOC, neurodivergent, Veterans, and individuals with physical disabilities.

Approach to therapy

Dr. Reed’s approach to therapy begins with a thoughtful evaluation to identify a treatment approach for you based on current research findings, your goals and understanding of your needs, and continuous collaborative evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy for you. Dr. Reed’s style combines structure to support your growth and flexibility to meet you where you are each visit. She primarily draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and other mindfulness-based interventions. She provides two evidence-based treatments for trauma: Prolonged Exposure and Cognitive Processing Therapy (VA certified). She also provides the gold standard treatment for insomnia, CBT-I.

When working with Dr. Reed you can expect that treatment will primarily focus on the present to improve your current daily life. Although we will discuss your history and what you’ve learned and experienced throughout your life, treatment will emphasize your values and increasing your agency to make sustainable changes that improve your functioning, sense of meaning, enjoyment, and quality of life. We will explore how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected and identify opportunities to shift old, familiar thought patterns as well as behavioral responses to increase your flexibility and alignment with your personal values. You can expect Dr. Reed to be authentic, actively engaged, and guiding you toward increased curiosity, willingness to experiment, and humor. To support your skills practice, Dr. Reed is likely to invite you to practice something relevant between most visits, such as increasing mindfulness of or tracking a behavior, responding to an internal experience differently, or implementing a skill reviewed in session. In addition, during therapy we will decide together on metrics to track your progress and integrate ongoing feedback about how therapy is going to make it as effective as possible for you.
