About

Dr. Schmotzer enjoys the opportunity to work with a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds and presenting concerns, including anxiety, depression, mood variability, relationship issues, chronic pain and challenging life transitions.  He believes that first and foremost we are people, not diagnoses, and that we must not be defined by our struggles.
Dr. Schmotzer earned his doctorate in psychology from Nova Southeastern University and completed his pre-doctoral internship at the Faulk Center for Group Counseling and post-doctoral work at Florida Tech. He was the first psychologist at Baptist Behavioral Health in Jacksonville, Florida to integrate into a primary care office as the practice sought ways to improve accessibility of care. He also enjoyed working in the mind-body pain management clinic at the Brattleboro Retreat helping people who struggled with chronic illness and pain.
Since the pandemic, Dr. Schmotzer has enjoyed utilizing this relatively new telehealth technology to deliver care and appreciates how this has opened the doors for those who might not have otherwise been able or comfortable seeking psychotherapy.

Approach to therapy

Dr. Schmotzer is a psychologist with over twenty years of licensed clinical experience. He utilizes an integrated approach to therapy that draws from Rogerian client centered, psychodynamic, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT,) and functional contextual based cognitive therapies. At his core, Dr. Schmotzer believes the therapy process should be centered around and driven by you. He seeks to facilitate your work towards achieving your unique goals and recognizes how different these can be for the many diverse people who seek therapy. He works to create a non-judgmental space where the sometimes challenging journey of therapy finds balance between support and growth, and he never loses sight that this is your process, at your pace, and that you are the expert in your own life.
